Bert Berns (born 1942 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American jazz pianist and composer.
Early life
Berns was born in Chicago to a Jewish family. His brother is producer and arranger David Berns. At an early age he began learning the piano, playing with his brothers in their band the Bern Brothers in high school.
In 1961, after studying with Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Billy Eckstine, he moved to New York and began his career as a composer, performing, and recording.
Career
After the release of Bluebird, he signed with GRP Records in 1969, releasing ten albums over the next fourteen years. He also collaborated with Ray Charles and Ramsey Lewis, and played with Duke Ellington for eight years.
Berns recorded several albums as leader, including Waltzin' with Saint Jack (1980), Never Let Me Go (1985), and St. James Infirmary (1994). The latter was recorded at the behest of composer and producer Kenny Wheeler, who had been a student of Berns's.
His 1986 album, Ben's Man, included Berns's first recording of original compositions. He had been invited to play by a percussionist named
